Beckenham is lucky in having a variety of pantomime choices from both professional performers and amateur dramatic groups.
St George’s Players 2014 pantomime offering is Cinderella – and I thought you might enjoy a sneak preview of early rehearsals. I’ll follow this blog up with another as we get nearer show time so you can have tasters of more cast, costumes and set.
We have a dashing Prince Charming assisted by his valet, lady’s man Dandini. (Yep, that’s me as Dandini) The Prince meets and falls in love with a beautiful girl in the woods but he has no idea who she is – the audience have a good idea though!
At the palace, the wicked Chancellor Wadbourne and his crony Crawley plan to diddle the new Prince out of his fortune. Biggins has overheard them, but will he be able to tell anyone? And will the Town Crier find his voice?
Baron Hardup, Cinderella’s father, struggles with the expensive tastes of his second wife, Baroness Nagella and her two daughters Ephemia and Hortensia. He’s down to only one servant, the faithful Buttons, so Cinderella herself has to do the housework.
Isabella tries to help her friend Cinderella but is really on the hunt for Mr Right. There are certainly eligible men out hunting in the woods but Isabella rushes off to her dressmaker and misses them. Which is a pity as Dandini was ready to show the Prince how chasing girls is more fun than chasing wild boar.
Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother has her hands full; not only does she have to make sure Cinderella meets her Prince Charming and ensure a happy ever after, she has to contend with two apprentice fairies – will they manage to earn their wings by the end of the Pantomime?
More importantly, will the cast get to the end of rehearsal without too prompting?!
Watch this space for the update…when the 15th Beckenham Brownies take on crucial roles in the cast.
All photographs contained in this blog are by Hari Waterfield, who courageously attended pantomime rehearsal in order to take them.
