Julie Andrews and Beckenham’s Market on the Green

Did you know that Julie Andrews briefly lived in Beckenham during World War 2?

There are plenty of musicians and singers who have been – and are – residents; including David Bowie, Peter Frampton and Carey Blyton.

But it is Julie with the incredible singing voice who has been an inspiration for the Market on the Green this weekend; especially in her role as Mary Poppins in the Disney film musical.

More on the Market on the Green from Copers Cope Residents blog here

I won’t be at the Market as I’ll be in The Commando Temple in Deptford, supporting my son and others who are taking part in a charity strongman event to raise funds for prostate cancer.

But there is still a link, as the father of P L Travers, who wrote the original Mary Poppins novel, was born in Deptford!
